Subject: Sparse matrix equation solver package released: M-M.E.S.S.-3.0


The MATLAB and Octave toolbox for solving large-scale matrix equations
with low-rank methods is now available in version 3.0. This version
introduces:
- Krylov subspace projection-based solvers for Lyapunov and Riccati
equations
- the first supported unsymmetric equation (the sparse-dense Sylvester
equation)
- a new logging tool that allows to write output not only to the
console but also to structured logfiles (Markdown and LaTeX and HTML
files including figures, similar to what publish produces in MATLAB)

Moreover, existing solver have received additional features and

Subject: New Book, Numerical Approximation of Ordinary Differential Problems


Raffaele D'Ambrosio, Numerical approximation of ordinary differential
equations - From deterministic to stochastic numerical methods,
Springer (2023).

This book is focused on the numerical discretization of ordinary
differential equations (ODEs), under several perspectives. The
attention is first conveyed to providing accurate numerical solutions,
then it moves to a more modern vision of numerical approximation,
oriented to reproducing qualitative properties of the continuous
problem along the discretized dynamics over long times. The book
finally performs some steps in the direction of stochastic
differential equations (SDEs), with the intention of offering useful
tools to generalize the techniques introduced for the numerical
approximation of ODEs to the stochastic case, as well as of presenting
numerical issues natively introduced for SDEs.

The book is the result of an intense teaching experience as well as of
the research carried out in the last decade by the author. It is both
intended for students and instructors: for the students, this book is
comprehensive and rather self-contained; for the instructors, there is
material for one or more monographic courses on numerical ODEs/SDEs
and related topics. In this respect, the book can be followed in its
designed path and includes motivational aspects, historical
background, examples and software implemented in Matlab, that can also
be useful for the laboratory part of a course on numerical
ODEs/SDEs. The style of the book joins rigor with readability.

We are delighted to announce that the "Numerical Analysis of Galerkin
ROMs (NA G-ROMs)" online seminar series will continue for a second
semester. The series will restart on October 2, 2023. Seminars will
take place on Tuesday at 4:00 pm CEST, 10:00 am EDT, 07:00 am PDT, on
a weekly basis via zoom.

Please note that the opening seminar is on October 2, which is a
Monday. Starting with the second seminar, we will return to our usual
schedule, i.e., Tuesday.

The main purpose of the NA G-ROMs seminar series is to serve as a
forum for the Galerkin and Petrov-Galerkin reduced order model
community to exchange their views on both the achievements and the
"nagging" open problems in the numerical analysis of G-ROMs, e.g.,
proper orthogonal decomposition (POD), reduced basis method (RBM), and
related techniques. The NA G-ROMs seminar series aims at fostering
the exchange of ideas among the G-ROM community members who are
genuinely interested in the development of the mathematical
foundations of G-ROMs and, in particular, bringing the G-ROM numerical
analysis to a level comparable to that of classical numerical methods,
e.g., the finite element method.

Introduction to Gridap: Simulating PDEs using finite elements in Julia
Location: Australian National University, Canberra, Australia
Dates: November, 28 - 29 Nov, 2023

This two-day hands-on workshop will showcase the main features of
Gridap, an ecosystem of Julia packages for the simulation of problems
governed by PDEs.

Gridap has a very expressive user interface, allowing one to solve
complex PDE systems by stating the problem using whiteboard notation.
It implements multiple state-of-the-art finite element methods that
can efficiently exploit large-scale HPC supercomputers.

The workshop will be tutorial-based and will cover the main features
of Gridap, its application to several problems, and its deployment in
distributed memory machines. There will also be a brief introduction
to finite element methods addressed to participants without previous
background in these techniques.

The emphasis will be mainly on presenting the main software
abstractions underlying these packages and how these can be combined
to solve a variety of PDEs with application to different problems in
science and engineering. The choice of the PDE systems to be
discussed in the workshop will be based on the participant's interests
gathered during registration.

Funding is available to cover the accommodation and travel expenses of
research students. Participants must bring their own laptops.

The Mid-Atlantic NA Day 2023 will take place at Temple University,
Philadelphia on Friday 10 November 2023.

The purpose of this one-day meeting is to provide a forum for Graduate

at the very beginning of their careers, from the Mid-Atlantic region,

harmonic analysis, approximation theory, orthogonal polynomials, image
processing, inverse problems, partial differential equations, etc. It

of knowledge quickly.
