Ghana Numerical Analysis invites you to its maiden Ghana Numerical
Analysis Day (ONLINE) from August 25-26, 2021.

The goal of this workshop is to inform about research activities in
the areas of numerical analysis and applied mathematics. Students,
post-docs, faculty and scientists from Ghanaian universities and other
research institutions are invited to present their results/interests
and discuss their ideas. Apart from strengthening already established
contacts, this workshop also hopes to provide an opportunity to start
new collaborations. It will be a two-day event with contributed talks
of 20 minutes including questions and 5 minutes for Poster
presentation.

There is no registration fee, however, all interested participants are
required to register.

Through a community initiative supported by the Institute of
Mathematics and its Applications, the Isaac Newton Institute for
Mathematical Sciences and endorsed by the Edinburgh mathematics
society, Royal Statistical Society, the London Mathematical Society
and the Operational Research Society, we are delighted to announce
that in September 2021 the two-day Induction Course for lecturers new
to teaching mathematics and statistics within Higher Education will
once again take place. Whilst arrangements may still be subject to
change due to the ongoing Covid-19 situation and any future Government
guidance, we are currently preparing for the Induction Course to be
delivered as a hybrid model with the option for some delegates to
attend in person.

The Induction Course for New Lecturers in the Mathematical Sciences
has been designed by the mathematics community so that it is ideally
suited for anyone who is new to or has limited experience teaching
mathematics or statistics within UK higher education. It will be
delivered by individuals with significant experience of teaching in
the mathematical sciences and will focus upon the specific details and
issues that arise in mathematics and statistics teaching and learning
within higher education including topics such as: Lecturing;
Supporting student learning; Making teaching interactive; Assessment,
examinations and feedback; Linking teaching & research; Using
technology to enhance teaching and learning; Using examples and
mathematical problem solving.

The abstract submission deadline for the upcoming ninth edition of the
Matrix Equations and Tensor Techniques Workshop (METTIX) has been
extended to 11 August 2021. The event will be held on Thursday and
Friday 9-10 September 2021. We are currently planning for a hybrid
meeting including remote contributions alongside in-person
presentations delivered at the Department of Mathematics and Computer
Science of the University of Perugia, Italy. Should restrictions on
gatherings and travel make a hybrid event impossible, the conference
will be held virtually.

The focus will be on recent theoretical and computational advances in
the solution of tensor problems and linear and nonlinear matrix
equations. We are pleased to announce that the workshop will feature
two keynote lectures by Dario A. Bini (University of Pisa, Italy) and
Lieven De Lathauwer (KU Leuven, Belgium).

Registration is free of charge and attendees are invited to contribute

In the Faculty IV (Department of Mathematics) at Trier University, the
position of a research assistant (f/m/d) in optimization is to be
filled starting from November 2021. Remuneration is based on the
salary group E 13 TV-L (100%) and the position is filled for an
initial period of three years. The tasks include the support of the
professorship "Nonlinear Optimization" in research and teaching as
well as the participation in the organization of the
professorship. The opportunity for a doctorate is given.

The working group "Nonlinear optimization" is mainly concerned with
mixed-integer nonlinear optimization as well as equilibrium
problems. We study theoretical properties of these problem classes and
develop algorithms to solve both mixed-integer nonlinear optimization
and equilibrium problems. Many of the current questions in the working
group are motivated by technical-physical or economic aspects in the
field of energy, such as, for example, the cost-effective control of
gas transport networks or the analysis of electricity trading in
Germany and Europe. The applicant is expected to enjoy working in an
international team and to enjoy applied mathematical research. We also
expect the candidate to be able to work independently, to be reliable
and willing to work in an interdisciplinary environment, as well as to
have excellent English language skills. The prerequisite for
employment is a master or diploma degree (or equivalent) from a
university in mathematics. Severely handicapped persons are given
preferential employment if they are suitable. Trier University is
trying to increase the number of its female academics and urges them

A postdoctoral research associate position is available in the
Department of Mathematics at TU Kaiserslautern, Germany. The position
is funded by the German Research Council (DFG) within the project
'Coupled analysis of active biological processes for meniscus tissue
regeneration'. The main task will be to develop a novel computational
framework for the simulation and parameter identification of in vitro
experiments for human meniscus regeneration, in collaboration with
bioengineers and biomathematicians. Prior experience in computational
mechanics or numerical PDEs and strong programming skills are
expected. The position is for 2 years plus an optional extension.

An exciting opportunity exists to apply for a 4-year fully funded PhD
studentship to work on "Randomized parallel algorithms for data
assimilation in numerical weather prediction." Data assimilation is
the process of updating a model forecast with the latest observations
to ensure that the forecasting model stays close to reality. It is a
crucial component of numerical weather prediction systems. This
project will develop new randomized numerical methods for solving the
data assimilation problem and test them within the European Centre for
Medium Range Weather Forecasts system.

The project supervisors will be Professor Jennifer Scott and Dr Amos
Lawless from the University of Reading, together with Dr Massimo
Bonavita and Dr Nicolas Bousserez from ECMWF (https://www.ecmwf.int/).

Funding is available (fees plus stipend) for UK and international
students. Candidates should have a strong mathematical background and
preferably some experience of programming.

studentship to work on "Large-scale linear least squares solvers with
applications". The project will focus on developing a new generation
of algorithms for solving sparse numerical linear algebra problems
that arise in practical applications, with a strong emphasis on
large-scale least squares and related problems. Applications will
include image reconstruction, in particular, bundle adjustment, cosmic
microwave background data analysis in astrophysics, and data fitting
in weather forecasting.

Funding is available (fees plus stipend) for UK and international
students. Candidates should have a strong mathematical background and
preferably some experience of programming.

The project supervisors will be Professor Jennifer Scott (University
of Reading and Rutherford Appleton Laboratory) and Dr Hussam Al Daas
