Subject: Francoise Chatelin, 1941 - 2020


It is with deep sadness that I am announcing the passing away of
Francoise Chatelin on May 14, 2020. Francoise, who was born under the
name Laborde, earned the French Aggregation in Mathematics (1963)
while at the prestigious Ecole Normale Superieure, and then the
'Doctorat d'Etat' in 1971. She began her academic career at the
Institut de Mathematiques Appliquees de Grenoble, which at the time
had a world-renown team in numerical analysis under the leadership of
Noel Gastinel, her Doctoral supervisor. For a while Francoise worked
on eigenvalue problems of linear operators. This effort culminated
with the publication of her book ``Spectral approximation of linear
operators" which appeared in 1983. Francoise became well-known for
her contributions on eigenvalue problems whether for infinite
dimensional operators or matrices. She published two volumes on the
computation of eigenvalues of matrices (one of them in French). She
later became interested in the impact of finite precision arithmetic
on computations and a number of other topics including mathematics in
economy, stability and chaos, and more recently the mathematics of
life. Francoise was a faculty member at the University of Grenoble
from 1971 to 1985, at the Universite Paris-Dauphine from 1993 to 1996,
and then at the university of Toulouse-1 from 1996 until she became
emeritus. She was also affiliated with CERFACS from its inception in
1987. Her career involved appointments with industry as well:
IBM-Paris (1985-1991) and then Thompson, a French company,
(1992-1993).

Francoise was characterized by an insatiable curiosity and openness to
new ideas and by a strong independent thinking. Her students will
remember her as a person who put immense efforts in helping those
among them who were from different backgrounds. She was a champion in
the cause of promoting female mathematicians and was quite successful
in this regard. Francoise is survived by her children Isabelle and
Laurent. Condolences to association@imag.fr who will transmit.

Subject: Olvi Mangasarian, 1934 - 2020


We are sad to report that Olvi L. Mangasarian, the John von Neumann
Professor Emeritus of Mathematics and Computer Sciences at the
University of Wisconsin-Madison passed away on March 15 from
complications from a fall and subsequent stroke. He was a pioneer, a
leader, and an icon in the field of mathematical programming. With
more than 50 years of fundamental contributions to all aspects of
continuous optimization ranging from abstract theory to practical
applications, Professor Mangasarian's broad research impacted
generations of applied mathematicians and engineers, opened new
domains of opportunities for researchers, created excitement in
applied subjects, inspired numerous young minds, and provided the
impetus for the sustained advancement of the field.

Since the beginning, Olvi was a central figure in continuous
optimization. Perhaps his best-known contribution, the
ground-breaking Mangasarian-Fromovitz constraint qualification (MFCQ)
for nonlinear programming published in 1967, lies at the heart of the
entire field of constrained optimization. Olvi also wrote a seminal
paper on linear and nonlinear separation of patterns by linear
programming published in 1965 that provided the foundation of the
mathematical programming approach to data mining and knowledge
discovery. These two pioneering articles were followed by the
publication in 1969 of the classic monograph Nonlinear Programming,
which was appropriately reproduced in 1994 as the 10th volume in the
series "SIAM Classics in Applied Mathematics." This book remains an
invaluable textbook for students and a basic reference for expert
researchers.

Throughout his career, Olvi obtained numerous fundamental results,
most notably in the areas of linear and nonlinear programming,
complementarity problems, variational inequalities and methods for
data mining and analytics. Outstanding characteristics of his results
are their elegance, their enormous impact, and their foundational role
in many subsequent extensions. He and colleagues at Wisconsin also
organized a series of conferences in Madison, first on nonlinear
programming and later on parallel optimization that were highly
influential. Olvi was truly an inspirational person and will be sadly
missed by the whole optimization community.

Modelling with Ordinary Differential Equations: A Comprehensive

This book should represent a new paradigm in the usual understanding
and teaching of modelling with ordinary differential equations (ODEs).
In fact, in addition to addressing different topics ranging from the
general theory of ODEs, stability properties of solutions, limit
cycles and synchronisation, and the fundamental topic of the calculus
of variation, the book discusses the solution of inverse problems with
ODEs that appear in the calibration of differential
models. Furthermore, assuming that an adequate model of a given
phenomenon is available, the book provides an introduction to optimal
control tools that are required to design control mechanisms for the
model to perform a given task. These tools are further extended to
address problems of competition and cooperation that are modelled in
the framework of differential games. The book is completed with a
chapter on different stochastic processes and stochastic differential
equations, and a final chapter on neural networks to solve ODE
problems and related parameter identification problems. As far as
possible, the book aims to be self-contained, presenting a large
variety of topics related to modelling with ODEs together and in a
unified manner. For this purpose, many theoretical results are proved,
many illustrative examples complement the text, and numerical methods
are discussed to solve problems arising in the different chapters (a
suite of codes is available online).

This monograph provides an introduction to the design and analysis of
Hybrid High-Order methods for diffusive problems, along with a panel
of applications to advanced models in computational mechanics. Hybrid
High-Order methods are new-generation numerical methods for partial
differential equations with features that set them apart from
traditional ones. These include: the support of polytopal meshes,
including non-star- shaped elements and hanging nodes; the possibility
of having arbitrary approximation orders in any space dimension; an
enhanced compliance with the physics; and a reduced computational cost
thanks to compact stencil and static condensation.

The first part of the monograph lays the foundations of the method,
considering linear scalar second-order models, including scalar
diffusion - possibly heterogeneous and anisotropic - and
diffusion-advection-reaction. The second part addresses applications
to more complex models from the engineering sciences: non-linear
Leray-Lions problems, elasticity, and incompressible fluid flows. This
book is primarily intended for graduate students and researchers in
applied mathematics and numerical analysis, who will find here
valuable analysis tools of general scope.
