Subject: Heinz Unger

Heinz Unger pioneered the use of Newton methods for the computation of
eigenvalue problems -- an approach that has come to represent the
foundation of many modern algorithms, in particular Jacobi-Davidson
methods. We are sad to report that Heinz Unger died on 6 November
2007 at the age of 93.

Heinz Unger completed his dissertation on the numerical solution of
initial value problems for linear ordinary differential equations in
1944, under the supervision of Alwin Walther. In 1958 Heinz Unger was
offered the first chair for applied mathematics at the University of
Bonn. There he founded, in 1968, the German society for mathematics and
information processing (GMD). Heinz Unger became Professor
Emeritus at the University of Bonn in 1979.

Heinz Unger's ground breaking 1950 paper on the nonlinear solution of
eigenvalue problems, along with an English translation, can be found

Subject: Update on remembering Gene Golub around the world on Feb 29

This is an update on the plans to remember Gene Golub around the world
on Friday February 29. In addition to a memorial afternoon and
a technical day at Stanford, events will also take place in
Adelaide, Canberra, Dartmouth (Mass.), Hong Kong, Leuven, Linkoping,
Oxford, Pisa, Tel Aviv, Tripolis (Greece), Urbana-Champaign and Waterloo.

It's not too late to organize an event to celebrate Gene in your
corner of the globe on Feb 29. If you'd like to do so, please
send me email with the subject header "Gene". There are no constraints
on the kind of event: anything Gene would have enjoyed, from
a day of scientific talks dedicated to Gene, to a special
party in your home that is open to his friends and colleagues.

Subject: Special Issue, Stat. Signal Processing & Mechanical Systems Diagnosis

"Statistical Signal Processing and Mechanical Systems Diagnosis", Special
Issue of Advances on Acoustics and Vibration Journal (Hindawi Corp.)

Call for Papers: By monitoring the energy coming from mechanical
systems (e.g., acoustics and vibration emission) it is possible to
estimate not only actual condition but also future behavior of the
machine. Problems involved on diagnosis via acoustics and vibration
monitoring reside in time-varying nature of measured signals,
complexity of the vibration pattern of defective mechanical
components, interference of random signals and sources of acoustics
and vibration emission, etc. Then, Statistical Signal Processing
Techniques (SSPT) are more and more applied and developed in order to
attain a more accurate machine condition monitoring.

SSPT applied on machine condition monitoring can be classified into:
- Preprocessing techniques (for signal conditioning, such as filtering
and deconvolution techniques, genetic algorithms applications, etc.)
- Feature extraction techniques (temporal and spectral analysis, envelope
detection, higher-order statistical and cyclostationary processing,
time-frequency analysis, etc.)
- Condition classification techniques (artificial neural network
applications, expert systems, fuzzy logic, etc.)
Spectral analysis emerges as the signal processing technique more used for
machine fault detection. However, nonlinearity and nonstationationarity
properties of acoustics and vibration signal emitted by certain mechanical
components, and the challenge of estimating low magnitude signal
properties at noise environments, have led to the application of advanced
signal processing techniques such as time-frequency analysis, higher-order
statistical processing, cyclostationary analysis, etc.

Recognizing the growing importance of and interest in effective
application of signal processing techniques on machine diagnosis,
Hindawi’s Journal on Advances on Acoustics and Vibration will devote a
special issue to innovative research papers in advanced statistical
acoustics and vibration analysis for machine condition monitoring.

Topics of interest involve not only those techniques included in the SSPT
classification, but also their practical implementation (algorithm
optimization, hardware implementation, embedded systems, etc.).

Submission of contributions: Interested authors should submit a file
with complete manuscript through the journal Manuscript Tracking
System at http://mts.hindawi.com/.

Subject: PhD position on simulating evolutionary dynamics, Simula Research Lab

Simula Research Laboratory conducts basic research in the fields of
communication technology, software engineering and scientific
computing. The research in the Scientific Computing (SC) department
is focused on the development of numerical methods, algorithms and
software, and large-scale biomedical and systems biology oriented
simulation studies applying these methods.

Currently, we plan to extend our biologically inspired research to
simulation studies of evolutionary dynamics of genetic networks and
their role in species adaptation, formation and development. For this
project we seek a candidate for an available PhD position (3 years).
The position will be supervised by a new member of our research
group; Dr Kirsten ten Tusscher. In the current, post-genomic era, it
has become increasingly clear that to understand the functioning of
biological cells, tissues, organisms and populations it is not enough
to know which genes or proteins they possess. In addition, one also
needs to understand how these genes and proteins interact dynamically
in complex networks and how these interactions have arisen during
evolution. As an illustration, after the human genome was sequenced,
people were surprised by the relatively small number of genes found
in humans. Based on gene numbers in simpler organisms a much larger
number was expected. It is now becoming clear that our larger
complexity relative to single celled and simple multicellular
organisms resides not so much in the number of genes we have but in
the way these genes interact in complex networks. In the current
research we will study the role of genetic networks in several key
biological evolutionary processes: the adaptation of species to their
(changing) environment, the splitting of a species into multiple
species, and the development of multicellular organisms.

Simula offers excellent opportunities for doing high quality
research, generous support for travels and equipment, and competitive
salary (around 47.000,- Euro/69.000,- USD for a Ph.D. position and
58.000,- Euro/84.500,- USD for a Postdoc position).

We are looking for candidates with a strong interest in biological
and evolutionary oriented research and a University degree in
physics, applied mathematics, computer science, artificial
intelligence, biomedical engineering, or computational biology. The
position requires excellent English writing skills and high marks
from the BSc and MSc degree. Women are encouraged to apply. For more
information visit http://www.simula.no/jobs, or contact Kirsten ten
Tusscher (tentussc@simula.no) or Joakim Sundnes (sundnes@simula.no).
To apply for these positions, email a short application letter and
curriculum vitae with publication list to jobs@simula.no. The subject
of the email must contain 0820 Scientific Computing.
