Subject: New Book, Metabolic Networks, Elementary Flux Modes, and

Polyhedral Cones

Metabolic Networks, Elementary Flux Modes, and Polyhedral Cones
by Isaac Klapper, Daniel B. Szyld, and Kai Zhao

This book presents a mathematical analysis of the relationship between
the cell biology idea of metabolic networks and the mathematical idea
of polyhedral cones, which have become important constructs in the
field of microbiology. Fundamental objects called elementary flux
modes (EFMs) can be described mathematically via convex cone concepts;
the fundamental algorithm of this relationship is the Double
Description method. While this method has an extended history in the
field of computational geometry, this monograph addresses its
relatively recent use in the context of cellular metabolism, providing
an easy-to-read introduction to a central topic of mathematical
systems biology.

Subject: SIAM Imaging Science, Germany, Mar 2022

The 2022 SIAM Conference on Imaging Science (IS22) will be held at the
Technische Universitat Berlin, Germany, March 22-25, 2022.

The interdisciplinary field of imaging science is experiencing
tremendous growth. New devices capable of imaging objects and
structures from nanoscale to the astronomical scale are continuously
being developed and improved, and as a result, the reach of science
and medicine has been extended in exciting and unexpected ways. The
impact of this technology has been to generate new challenges
associated with the problems of formation, acquisition, compression,
transmission, and analysis of images. By their very nature, these
challenges cut across the disciplines of physics, engineering,
mathematics, biology, medicine, statistics, and data science. While
the primary purpose of this conference is to focus on mathematical
issues, the other facets of imaging, such as biomedical, geophysical,
and engineering aspects, for example, will also play an important role.

Important Dates and Deadlines:
September 6, 2021 - submission for minisymposium proposals
September 20, 2021 - submission for contributed presentations &
minisymposium speaker abstracts
Late December 2021 - online registration opening
