The Householder Award for the best PhD dissertation in the area of
numerical linear algebra was awarded at the Householder XVII
Symposium, held earlier this summer in Zeutheun, Germany. The award
is given every three years and there were twenty submissions.

Subject: 14th Leslie Fox Prize In Numerical Analysis

The Fourteenth Leslie Fox Prize meeting will take place on Monday,
June 29th 2009, at the Mathematics Institute, University of Warwick.

Entries for the Fourteenth Leslie Fox Prize competition can now be submitted.
Any person who is less than 31 years old on January 1st, 2009 and has
not already won a first prize is eligible. Each entry should consist of
a paper, describing some of the candidate's research, that is suitable for a
40 minute lecture at a numerical analysis meeting.

The entries will be considered by an Adjudicating Committee of Andrew
Stuart (Warwick, Chairman), Mark Ainsworth (Strathclyde) and Nick
Higham (Manchester). Entries should be received, by the Chairman,

SIAG/Geosciences Career Prize & Junior Scientist Prize

The SIAM Activity Group on Geosciences (SIAG/GS) will make the first
award of two new prizes at the SIAM Conference on Mathematical and
Computational Issues in the Geosciences (GS09), to be held June 15-19,
2009, in Leipzig, Germany.

The SIAG/GS Career Prize will be awarded to an outstanding senior
researcher who has made broad and distinguished contributions to the
field of geosciences. The award may be given to any scientist who has
held a PhD or equivalent degree for at least 15 years.

The SIAG/GS Junior Scientist Prize will be awarded to an outstanding
junior researcher in the field of geosciences for distinguished
contributions to the field in the three calendar years prior to the year
of the award. At least one of the papers containing this work must be
published in English in a peer-reviewed journal bearing a publication
date in the calendar years 2006-2008. The recipient must be a graduate
student or the paper's publication date must be no more than three
calendar years later than the year in which the author received the PhD
or equivalent degree.

For both prizes, the award will consist of a plaque and a certificate
containing the award citation. The recipient will be invited to present

Germund Dahlquist Prize

The Germund Dahlquist Prize is awarded to a young scientist (normally

Dahlquist, especially the numerical solution of differential equations

Subject: New Fortran 95 package of parallel multilevel preconditioners

MLD2P4 - Multi-Level Domain Decomposition Parallel Preconditioners Package
based on PSBLAS, v. 1.0, has been released.

MLD2P4 implements various versions of one-level additive and of multi-level
additive and hybrid Schwarz preconditioners. In the multi-level case, an
algebraic approach based on smoothed aggregation is applied to generate
coarse-level corrections. The matrix is required to be square, real or
complex, with a symmetric sparsity pattern.

MLD2P4 has been designed to provide scalable and easy-to-use preconditioners
in the context of the PSBLAS (Parallel Sparse Basic Linear Algebra
Subprograms) computational framework and can be used in conjuction with the
Krylov solvers available in this framework. The package has been designed
employing object-oriented techniques, using Fortran 95, with interfaces to
additional third party libraries, that can be exploited in building multi-
level preconditioners. Single and double precision versions of MLD2P4 are
available for both the real and the complex case, that can be all used
through a single interface. The parallel implementation is based on a SPMD
paradigm for distributed-memory architectures; the inter-process data
communication is based on MPI and is managed mainly through PSBLAS.

Subject: Scotch 5.1 is out!

We announce the release, as libre/free software, of revision 5.1 of the
SCOTCH and PT-SCOTCH software package and library for sequential and
parallel graph partitioning, sequential mesh/hypergraph partitioning and
static mapping, and sequential and parallel sparse matrix block ordering.

IMPORTANT FEATURES: PT-Scotch now provides an interface for parallel
graph partitioning and static mapping. At the time being, target
architectures other than complete graphs, whether weighted or not, are
not taken into account, such that only parallel graph partitioning is
available, not full parallel static mapping. Parallel static mapping
will be available in a future release. Parallel graph partitioning is
performed to date by the means of recursive parallel graph
bipartitioning, not direct k-way partitioning. PT-Scotch is therefore
slower than direct parallel k-way partitioners, yet yields high
quality partitions.

WHAT IS SCOTCH: SCOTCH is a project carried out at the Laboratoire
Bordelais de Recherche en Informatique (LaBRI) of the Universite
Bordeaux I. It is part of project ScAlApplix of INRIA Bordeaux -
Sud-Ouest. Its goal is to apply graph theory, with a ``divide and
conquer'' approach, to scientific computing problems such as graph
partitioning, static mapping, and sparse matrix ordering.

HOW TO GET SCOTCH: Scotch can be freely downloaded, under the terms of
the CeCILL-C license. To ease the development, diffusion, and
circulation of information regarding the SCOTCH project, most of its

Algorithms and Applications is devoted to various novel, efficient
linear algebra techniques and their applications in diverse areas of
science and industry. The special issue is to follow the PMAA'08
Workshop, which was held in Neuchatel, Switzerland, June, 20-22, 2008

during the Workshop. Submissions from other researchers, which fit the

Papers submitted to the special issue should have a strong parallel
