Subject: Hyperbolic Sine Integral with Complex Argument

I am trying to evaluate the hyperbolic sine integral with complex

Shi(a+ib) = integral of sinh(z)/z between z=0+i0 and z=a+ib (keeping
argument the same) incoporate into my code. There is a series expansion in Abramowitz
and Stegun, but finite precision arithmetic renders its useless far from
zero unless z is a positive real number.

At present I have tried parametrizing the line integral, and using a
simple integration rule such as Simpsons to evaluate the real and
imaginary parts of the integral separately. But I don't feel this is
giving me the right results.

Can anyone help?? I think the latest version of Matlab provides this
function, but this is not an option.

Subject: Optimization Prize for Young Researchers

Optimization Prize for Young Researchers

PRINCIPAL GUIDELINE. The Optimization Prize for Young Researchers,
established in 1998 and administered by the Optimization Section (OS)
within the Institute for Operations Research and Management Science
(INFORMS), is awarded annually at the INFORMS Fall National Meeting to one
(or more) young researchers for the most outstanding paper in optimization
that is submitted to or published in a refereed professional journal. The
prize serves as an esteemed recognition of promising colleagues who are at
the beginning of their academic or industrial career.

DESCRIPTION OF THE AWARD. The optimization award includes a cash amount
of US$1,000 and a citation certificate. The award winners will be invited
to give a one-hour lecture of the winning paper at the INFORMS Fall National
Meeting in the year the award is made. It is expected that the winners
will be responsible for the travel expenses to present the paper at the
INFORMS meeting.

ELIGIBILITY. The authors and paper must satisfy the following three
conditions to be eligible for the prize:

(a) the paper must either be published in a refereed professional journal
no more than three years before the closing date of nomination, or be
submitted to and received by a refereed professional journal no more than
three years before the closing date of nomination;

(b) all authors must have been awarded their terminal degree within five
years of the closing date of nomination;

(c) the topic of the paper must belong to the field of optimization in its
broadest sense.

We intend to hold an informal working group on the "Dynamics of Numerics"
as part of the Fields Institute Thematic Year on Computational
Challenges in Science and Engineering. This meeting will explore the use
of dynamical systems techniques to study iterative processes. Subject matter

Annual Midwest NA Day

This year's Annual Midwest NA Day is scheduled for Saturday, May 12, 2001
on the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign campus. NA Day will start
at 9:00 AM and conclude on or before 5:30 PM.

Midwest NA Day conferences have been well-attended, one-day meetings for
colleagues within the Midwest region to interact without necessarily having
to travel by air. Midwest NA Day is an opportunity for young people,
especially, to present their work in a friendly atmosphere. A notable
example was an early presentation that Roland Freund gave on QMR.

The informal nature of the conference and the variety of talks together
combined in the past to make Midwest NA Day a memorable event. The
numerical group hopes to continue this tradition.

Usually there are one or two speakers, not necessarily from the Midwest,
whose prominence sets a tone of excellence for the meeting. This year, Gene
Golub is planning to participate. Also, Zdenek Strakos of the Academy of
Sciences of the Czech Republic and Adjunct Professor at Emory University
will attend and present an overview talk on Convergence of Krylov Subspace

The conference will be held the same weekend that Bill Gear receives an
Alumni Achievement Award at graduation ceremonies in Urbana.

highly motivated PH.D. graduates to participate in
the Post Doctoral Fellowship program (2 positions).

There are specific opportunities at this time for Postdoctoral
fellow with strong computational and mathematical experience
in the numerical solution of partial differential equations.
One of the projects is the development and implementation of
new Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE)
finite difference/finite volume methods for the solution of
multidimensional high speed fluid flow problems on unstructured grids.

These are highly competitive positions. Experience
in developing codes based on Lagrangian, continuous
rezone (ALE) methods, or Free Lagrangian methods is preferred.
Familiarity with modern multidimensional methods for advection is desirable.
Extensive experience in FORTRAN coding on a variety of computing
platforms is required.

Los Alamos National Laboratory, located in the beautiful

Position for a Ph.D. student at the
Seminar for Applied Mathematics, SAM, at ETH in Zurich

We are looking for a Ph.D. student to do research in a
project on Large Eddy Simulation and Combustion. The
research should be based on a new subgrid-scale
model for LES which has been developed by Maurer
and Fey in the SAM. While learning the theory and
modeling of reactive and non-reactive flow the
student will first have to learn the already existing
LES code. Implementing boundary conditions will enable
the use of the code for (non-reactive) jet flows.
Comparison with commercial RANS code will be done.
In a second step combustion will be introduced.

This position is one of three in a larger project
which the SAM is doing together with groups in
the mechanical engineering department where
CFD and experiments are done.

The person should have computational and mathematics
back ground with a good understanding of physics.
The willingness to cooperate with the other
researchers in engineering is highly important.
